Decorative lighting can come from very different backgrounds. Two fixtures may share the same visual language while one is an original period piece and the other is a newly manufactured reproduction. Understanding that distinction helps buyers evaluate condition, finish, restoration and suitability with the right expectations.
Original antique or vintage
This classification is used for a period piece represented as original based on the information reasonably available at the time of listing. Original pieces may show patina, surface variation, signs of use or age-related wear. Those characteristics can be part of the condition of the item rather than defects.
Restored original
A restored original is a period fixture that has undergone work while retaining the identity of the original piece. Restoration can include cleaning, polishing, structural repair, rewiring, refinishing or the replacement of components such as sockets, fasteners, chains, canopies or glass.
For older fixtures, complete historical restoration records are not always available. Where known and important to the purchase, significant restoration or replacement information should be disclosed on the individual listing.
Reproduction or vintage-style
A reproduction, antique-style or vintage-style fixture is newly manufactured to reflect the design language of an earlier style or period. These pieces are not represented as original period objects. This category can be useful for buyers who want the character of an earlier design with current-production availability.
Newly made or custom
Some lighting is current production without being presented as a reproduction of a particular period. Custom pieces may also be made, adapted or finished for a specific project.
Why the individual listing matters
General categories are helpful, but the product page remains the most important source of information. Review photographs, measurements, materials, specifications and condition notes before purchasing.
